I’m a year late, but I’d like to thank you for writing this up. I had to Google quite a few pages before I found one that explained this incident.
And call me a conspiracy nut, but it all sounds like an advertising stunt to me. Got a new show? No one really paying attention yet? Why not insult the *chan boards? The channers will hate you, but watch your show *anyway*, because they’re perverse like that. And the people who *hate* the channers will love you because you insulted their enemies. Everybody wins!

2channel may be “a hangout for lonely Japanese otaku” but it has a wide range of opinion and a wide range of quality of posts. it’s just that sometimes the foul-mouthed and unimaginative herd has more and louder voices than the more interesting posters. one thing for sure, though, there are a lot of people there who know a lot of anime.
