The Melancholy of Kuki city
The increasing popularity of Lucky Star has apparently started raising some concerns with the residents of Kuki city, as mentioned in this blog post by a resident. There have been an increasingly large number of fans who have been visiting the local Washinomiya Shrine which was featured in the anime.
This particular resident however is worried about security concerns in the town as he wonders how the general unknowing public would think of these anime fans walking around with their rucksacks and cameras, and mentions that there have been reports of an increasing number of suspicious people lingering around their schools.
The particular post has caused a heated discussion in the comments as anime fans protest the negative stereotype of otaku and that they should not be perceived as dangerous people.
There were a lot of people visiting Shirakawa village because of Higurashi too, I wonder if the people living there felt the same.

why is it some people always labels otaku as dangerous people?
seriously, what has an otaku done towards an individual? have they harmed someone or have beaten someone with a PVC figure or a dakimakura?

There are cases where otakus has been charged with child-abduction and murder in Japan. Media took it and ran with it. Kinda like how gaming was blamed for columbine shootings.

Has Kuki City really a strong association to Lucky Star?
The Higurashi village, Shirakawa-go is really beautiful, though i think it`s not easy travel to.Here`a link to pics and HD video of it: http://japan-geographic.tv/gifu/shirakawago/html
Columbine incident, wasn`t the main reason for it the easy access to guns?

I’m a Japanese.
Due to a media such as TV, the common citizens in Japan tend to regard otaku as people who has no common senses. Though there are a little otaku like that, most of them are safe and don’t want to be thought of it.
I think the discussion is caused by a personal stereotype toward otaku of the blog’s writer.
