Evangelion 1.01 film going for high prices

okanehoihoi.jpgThe limited edition package for the DVD edition of Evangelion 1.01 comes with a randomly selected cut of film containing five frames from the movie, and depending on your luck, you can either get anything between naked Ayanami or 5 frames showing the men’s toilet and nothing else.

And as all things go, the films containing Ayanami are going for high prices on Yahoo auctions now, already hitting 301,000 yen (US$3010) for one that’s showing Ayanami smiling as of writing. And other cuts also depicting Ayanami are going for similarly high prices.

    shes so overrated
give me film of asuka any day

  2. hiru Says:

    uh, men’s toilet?
so… would there be some with just the frames of the credits?

  3. serogane Says:

Hmm, I wonder if they have the entire movie split into millions of 5 frame cuts. I also wonder if someone’s trying to collect them all.

3000 bucks for 5 frames? Man, that’s stupid.

  5. Anonymous Says:

    Asuka.

  6. Huzzah Says:

5 more frames of the elevator with Rei and Asuka doing nothing would be nice…

  7. Tyrenol Says:

    Oh My God, People!

    How long are… waitaminute.

First off: Evangelion is a highly overrated piece of animu garbage created by some sick socialpath and allowed to exist because Japan is textbook sociopathy.

The rest of us had moved on. How about you?

  8. Pedr-A-Aziz Says:

    Tyrone

    what’s up broveth

anyway, yes. but stop stating what we thought about japan 5 years ago.

  9. BlackAdder Says:

    He’s talking about Evangelion, Azi.

Here, I agree with Tyrenol. Evangelion is ridiculously over-rated, and frankly, this is a bit too far. High bids just for…. ah never mind.

  10. Sqrfrk Says:

Overrated? Definitely. Animu garbage? Naw, that’s just a textbook ED citation. Much like DBZ, Eva was thoroughly entertaining. Of course, people had a tendency to look for plot threads that don’t exist in cartoons like Eva…perhaps for the anime subculture equivalent of a cocktail party?

Of course, the opinion that “eva sux” and the opinion that “3 grand for fake film OMG” belong to two completely distinct issues. I personally liked Eva and have not “moved on” as was suggested, but no way in hell would you catch me paying anything over five bucks for that junk. Then there are the sellers - it’s implied that they’d rather sell the shots for money rather than keep it for themselves.

    Then there are buyers.

  11. BlackAdder Says:

Well, I’m against both camps myself. While I can understand the former (one man’s meat is another man’s poision, even though I seriously dispute Eva’s claims), paying big bucks like that is just wanton.

  12. Tyrenol Says:

    Cleaning the counter:

The rest of us had moved on from Eva and their sickening ilk. We’ve also moved on from DBZ and their (sickening) ilk.

We look for shows that have some type of storyline to keep it from being disposable (which is what the pro-moe titles and anything made by KyotoAnime are). Anime titles that are less corporate and less pretentious.

Should I apologize for being some “elitist scumbag?” There’s nothing wrong with being an intelligent person wanting to be entertained by something equally intelligent.

  13. Sqrfrk Says:

Oh, you’re perfectly entitled to your own preferences in cartoons - that’s what makes it your opinion. Though your comment about “intelligent people” wanting “something equally intelligent” is pure flamebait, and nothing more. “Elitist scumbag” is one thing - your assertions are hardly intelligent and are simply on the other end of fanboy spectrum.

And I’m sure most would agree; both extremes are at the same level of annoying. And I stand by my claim that your disgust of Eva and your disgust of people paying 3k for Eva are two different issues. At the very least, I can agree with the latter and agree to disagree with the former.

  14. Pedr-A-Aziz Says:

    eva was ok.
it had a lot of high pitched screaming and music with some b-level robot action, but it also had a nice atmosphere
oh and the dudes paying 3k are also ok, they give Tyrenol another reason to be a fretting nancy

  15. Tyrenol Says:

I’m not looking for a flamewar. I’m just stating my opinion.

But hey; I have a question for you guys:

Which person is in need of more psychological help? Someone who’s willing to pay 3k for scenes from horrible, overrated, and mentally messed-up anime? Or someone who’s disgusted with the former?

  16. BlackAdder Says:

Frankly, though, I’d agree Sqrfrk more than Tyrenol here, since it’s not really that simple.

After all, there are (sadly, IMHO), a lot of Eva fans who are pretty rational and like it rationally, and aren’t the same as these extravagant people.

    ~

Still, I dislike Eva because I think it tried to make itself out as being different, but well, let’s see….. there was the whole psychology thing (which was based mostly on Freud, who isn’t exactly the best psychologist). Pedr mentioned the whole b-level robot action, which actually what Eva tried to avoid.

Frankly, if I had to pick a show that had a similar premise to Eva but did better… I’d pick RahXephon.

Also, while pretty much a lot of KyoAni fare is, well…. yeah…… I did like (no, love is better) Haruhi because it reminded me a lot of NieA_7 and Lain. No, reprhase that, the series is pretty much the two, minus aBe, and plus moe (and a drop of perverse).

  17. DTA Says:

The one problem with the series is that it has been overpromoted in excess, as if they’ve turned it into a religion. I ain’t gonna pay too much for this when half the world (and my country) is worried about putting rice on the table.

It’s should’ve been put to rest permanently just like most of what I’ve watched in the past, and EoE was supposed to be the end of it all, the period and the flatline, but heck, Gainax couldn’t resist milking any worth out of it (while the likes of Karekano suffered from near-lack of promotion).

I’ve witnessed the backlash myself, watching some once-devoted Eva fans (American, mostly) go on deciding to burn it down because they’re sick of writing fanfiction for it and talking about it all over again (and with 26 episodes, which direction that show should be going? Almost nowhere except for rehashes).

Until the apocalypse comes, finding superb storylines in anime in these days of over-commercialization, glut and clones is like trying to fry an egg on a lightbulb.

  18. Makoto-Shu Says:

Id say let them do what they want to do its their money! but still 3000 bucks for that frame…freaking hell….where do these people get their money…from a tree? o_O?

  19. Blackadder Says:

    Seconding DTA.

I’d go so far as to say that it’s overhyped, and isn’t as perfect as some make it out to be.

Of course, the same is gonna happen for Haruhi, so I’m holding on to Season 1 for now, unless Season 2 surpasses my expectations. Even then, I won’t gloss over Haruhi the way others do, or these rabid Eva fans gloss over Eva.

And I applaud DTA, since it’s very hard to take a stand against Eva these days.
