Akiba incident, anime, doujin and Dragon Quest
Chugoku Shimbun says that the “Dagger knife”, a knife that has an edge on both sides, that was used by the killer in the Akihabara stabbing incident is a popular item called “Dagger knife” that is present as an item in popular video games such as Dragon Quest.
Yomiuri Online agrees and reports that the “Dagger knife” is a weapon used in popular video games and the “Dagger knife” is very popular among young teenagers. The police is now discussing countermeasures to possibly tighten the regulation on the possession of knives with long blades. (The current regulation only requires registration if the blade is longer than 15 cm)
Zakzak reports that doujinshi was found in the Akiba killer’s room, and according to his colleagues, he likes to sing “lolicon anime songs” and proclaimed that he only likes 2D girls. The Akiba killer had also previously said that he likes Akihabara and had showed his colleagues around the area to places such as maid cafes.
Zakzak continues reporting on the killer’s interests with games and CDs that the killer had given to a friend, including doujin games such as Eternal Fighter Zero and Chantelise, and the killer reportedly loves a certain “Moe anime girl danmaku shooter” for the PC.
Yahoo reports that Masuda Hiroya, Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, has responded that they will try to see if they can regulate dangerous information on the internet in response to the fact that the Akiba killer had posted on a cellphone bbs (not 2ch) about his plans to kill people in Akiba hours before the incident but the authorities did not manage to detect it.
Also, Asahi reports that the police have announced that all the bystanders that tried to save the people that got stabbed should go for a blood test, because one of the males that died had an unnamed disease that can possibly spread by direct contact with his blood.

awww fuck.
This is the shit I was worried about happening…
…I thought that guy looked pretty dorky to just be a yakuza dude.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Oh…… boy.
I can imagine that Tyrenol is gonna pounce on the info presented here.
Still, I find it wierd that for the years that nothing had happened, one guy just had to go to the extreme and give everybody in the otakun subculture a bad name.
Thankfully, life has gotten back to normal, though they’ll needed added police (and maybe some martial arts lessons for the patronage there)
June 10th, 2008 at 2:35 am
Another step to getting our fun stuff banned! Lobbyists will pounce on this, like that woman mentioned on Sankaku.
June 10th, 2008 at 2:48 am
OMG! “Moe anime girl danmaku shooter” for the PC……
June 10th, 2008 at 2:56 am
Also for any Filipinos reading, it’s time to pretend to be conyo.
June 10th, 2008 at 4:04 am
This just keeps getting more and more fucked up, doesn’t it?
Great, here come the police and the censorship laws…
June 10th, 2008 at 4:38 am
Fuck, he loves Touhou, hates 3D PIG DISGUSTING and is crazy. Just as 95% of /jp/
June 10th, 2008 at 5:35 am
Maybe an uncanny similarity to the folks at /jp/ (or any other part of 4chan, for that matter)… but perhaps he’s not as net savvy as to visit 2ch periodically. Probably.
This just goes how to show how fragile otaku culture can really be… since it’s making its living by standing on the edges of what’s legal and what’s not.
@soloista:
Kinda tough to play as a conyoista. Then again, we can be anything in the internet. o_O
June 10th, 2008 at 7:38 am
No guys. I mean, Pinoy society, the highschoolness of it all…
June 10th, 2008 at 8:42 am
One possible plus side: maybe this’ll make Jack Thompson move overseas.
…Okay, so that was horrible. But then, so is everything about this. - ZM
June 10th, 2008 at 8:56 am
Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t we all change the subject.
I’m hoping that Funimation will do some good work with “Sasami’s Magical Girl Club,” “Ouran High’s Host Club,” and “Claymore.” (Especially since a lot of my favorite English voice actors will play my favorite characters.)
Also: Does anybody else have trouble getting into Dot-Anime’s “Streaming” and “Blog” section? Try it from here:

more like sounds like a toothless noyfb once gave his sob story to willie in his undershirt then proceeded to sing boom tarat tarat & repeatedly yell out bayooooooong in order to easily win millions of pesos so he could finally immigrate overseas and start over and raise a family of pinoy gangbanger faggot kids who drive beat-up ricer civics and bump out loud 24-hour stevie b because all the chinky gangbanging azn faggot neighbors looked cool doing it even though they’ve now moved on to purchasing beat-up 240sx’es and corolla gt-s’es and slam them into trees and guardrails for that ultimate doriftu experience

More censorship means the birth of more crazy weird fetishes. The old censorship laws gave us naughty tentacles and lolicon. With macabre anticipation I look forward to what more censorship will bring.
June 10th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I’m surprised they aren’t trying to make connections to Higurashi or School Days, or that neither have been brought up yet I guess.
This whole thing really is a mess.

Meh… The “Streaming” and “Blog” pages are back up in the Dot-Anime site.
Oh well…

*snicker*
Claymore, Ouran and Sasami, eh ?
I thinkw e all know Tyrenol’s current anime interests now…. ( not that they’re bad. Not at all. The three of them are very good in my book in fact. I think Claymore deserves a continuation,a nd I like both Fujioka and Suzumiya
Just a thought that some anime that is partially moe is not completely bad….)
June 11th, 2008 at 8:09 am
Wow, Blackadder. You snicker and then you put everything else in parentheses.
I want to watch anime that features average people who can kick ass 100% and whine 0%. The rest of these anime fans who like watching some fail, become (comedic) punching bags, whine, and moan; they’ve all been spoken for, more often than they should.
June 11th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Ok, so your gripe isn’t against moe, rather it’s against wussy protagonists?
June 11th, 2008 at 8:20 am
Ok, so your gripe isn’t against moe, but against wussy main characters?
June 11th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Maybe I shouldn’t use the word ’snicker’, but I think we can safely assume that at least one out of the three anime had one shortcoming (and that’s Claymore, since the ending clearly means its not an end, at least amonts msot people who ere not satisfied)
Hmmm…. I’d recommend Kurau Phantom Memory. In that one, a woman and her 12 year old partner kicked much ass and had 0% whining (the only people who DID whine in that show usually ended up dead) Plus, Studio BONES did it too.
Along those lines, I’d not recommend Texhnolyze, sicne that one had a decent amount of whining, and the prog… well, he ahd some really abd shortcomings.
But I dunno…. it’s usually a shounen or a very hardcore seinen show where 100% of the shows are of no-holds barred protagonists who are no mere pushovers.
Also I doubt all of the current anime fans like to see things fail.
~
Actually, pkick, I think Tyrenol’s views are more complicated then that, and his views are valid, even though, of course, they aren’t shared by everybody. Besides, I’m of the opinion that no one opinion in the fandom is exactly ‘right’. (I very much doubt mine is, though I try my best)
June 11th, 2008 at 9:22 am
ZOMG I’ve been cloned!
(Actually, just a browser crash while posting. I thought my post didn’t go through and retyped it. Sorry about the double.)
June 11th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Great, the return of the Otaku Murders is just what we needed…
June 11th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Me being complicated, or right, is not the problem here.
But to clear things up: I’m against “moe” AND “wussy protagonists” (especially when they’re guys).
Or, to put it more bluntly: If you had a choice between “cheesecake” or “substance;” and you KNOW that the cheesecake will rot your teeth as well as your brain… Let me use that nutjob Akiba murderer as an example. -_-;
I’mma take it to Compton: Maybe “Haruhi’s Melancholy” would get more fans if Kyon physically smacked up Haruhi (in comedic fashion, though) for being such a troublemaker. As oppose to standing around like a nobody with thoughts in the back of his head.
It would also help if many of the 1st-3rd tier characters get full names as oppose to having one name.
June 12th, 2008 at 12:12 am
Ok, so what constitutes “cheesecake” and “substance” media, and why? Just defining by result (ie: one rots your brain, the other doesn’t) is a functionally useless and intellectually lazy definition, if only for the fact that different people’s minds undergo different reactions (rotting vs. thriving) when processing the same piece of media/literature/etc. For example, one man studies a religious text and becomes a gentle charity worker, while the other man studies a religious text and becomes a crazy suicide cult leader. Or one man watches commercials and then wastes his money buying too many things, while the other man watches commercials and develops entirely new cinematic and visual media techniques.
Of course, I could just be reading too deeply into this (bad habit of mine), and your stance is simply “This rots me specifically (Tyrenol), so I’ll define it as cheesecake. This doesn’t rot me specifically (Tyrenol), so I’ll define it as substance”, and whenever you post you just skip the ’specific’ disclaimer for the sake of convenience (and also because such things are usually automatically implied when it comes to casual message board posts).

ALL LIGHT NOW!! NO REVERSE GEAR?
June 12th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Going too deep into “Haruhi Territory,” are we Blackadder. Thanks for the nod.
But if people REALLY want an example of “cheesecake;” I could say 90% of every anime made. Code Geass, Mai (Z)Hime, even Gundam now, Rosamia + Vampire, Haruhi, Lucky Star, everything Key, everything licensed under Geneon before the company sunk, every animu past 10:00pm and into the night, every animu based on visual novels that had the SUPERIOR sex removed, every animu based on gag manga, every animu without an average-looking guy, every animu that reveals some weak-looking guy getting bullied or (brow)beatened before a working plot is revealed. Anything the anime bloggers and #channelers start masturbating to…
Say the title of an anime you can think of, a time, and a place. And if some overweight, smelly, grotesque-looking guy with an anime T-shirt appears. That show is pure “cheesecake.”
The real tragedy is that Japan’s anime industry has the capability, and numerous opportunities to “not go there.” But it’s all for the ratings. For these guys, having genuine creativity is for looooooserrrrrrrs. Unfortunately for those outside of Japan/Asia, a company who licensed a loser product will FLOP if they don’t have “backup money.”
Truly sad considering how under-the-radar the really good shows are.
June 12th, 2008 at 11:56 am
> Say the title of an anime you can think of, a time, and a place. And if some overweight, smelly, grotesque-looking guy with an anime T-shirt appears. That show is pure “cheesecake.”
I’m afraid I can’t agree. Captain Harlock is pure cheesecake? Classic Gundam is pure cheesecake? Patlabor is pure cheesecake? The “ugly T-shirt otaku” covers every single anime out there, even the substantial classics. In fact, the older and more revered the show, the more, not less, “ugly T-shirt otaku” it is likely to harbor. This is even more so in Japan, where those classic anime simply have had more time and influence to get all sorts of people interested in it.
Putting aside the T-shirt test, I mean no disrespect, but honestly your preceeding definitions are still so incredibly vague and broad that they are useless. “90% of everything is crap” is certainly true, but so is “water is wet.” It’s true, but it’s not functionally useful information; it doesn’t help us process data any further than the original starting point.
Again, please don’t take this as an insult, but all that unfocused vagueness and negativity is beginning to give me the impression that your real complaints stem not from anime itself, but rather from the typical burnout that almost every dedicated long-time fan goes through. Your tastes have developed to the point where in order to match the enjoyment of your earlier days, the shows you watch must meet a more exacting, narrower, personalized standard. This is poses a problem, because anime is inherently mass-market entertainment, which means you will have to put more work into finding those few shows that appeal to you. Naturally, you resent having to do all that extra work for what used to come easy. Furthermore, that resentment may be coloring your perception of a few shows you could normally enjoy, making them seem like more crap than they actually are.
All I can say is maybe you should take a break and let your “anime-watching sensors” relax and recalibrate, instead of just pushing and searching harder and harder, building up more resentment and making things worse. For example, when your anime streaming video site was down for a few hours you ended up trying to derail an entirely unrelated discussion over it. I really think you need to step back, relax, and chill for a bit. All that anime out there won’t disappear forever just because you took a break from it.
/ as usual, I could be entirely off the mark; this is not professional advice; no guarantees; etc etc etc.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Here’s a thought. Legend of the Galactic Heroes arguably is not cheesecake… but would the inclusion of so many bishounen characters and the air of ambiguity surrounding some of the relationships classify it as pandering to the proto fujyoshis of the 90s?
Ah yes I’ll go watch my Panda-Z and Planetes now.
June 12th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I’ll leave the discussion here… though…
@Tyrenol: I go deep with all my shows.
June 18th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Oh my god, this is exactly what they did with the Columbine and Virginia Tech massacres. They tried to pin Marilyn Manson on the two Columbine kids, even though it was proven that the boys had a general dislike of the man, and they tried to pin video games on the Virginia Tech guy, while all he played were games like Sonic.
Okay, blame nihilistic music and violent video games. If someone is very, very, very mentally unstable, I guess it might have some sort of influence over a person, but Anime and Dragon Quest? …my faith in humanity has now gone lower than -1,000. Thank you Japan, for bringing the stupidity level even lower than it was before.
