Sky Crawlers opens to #7 in the box office

bye.jpgOshii Mamoru’s The Sky Crawlers has been in cinemas since the 2nd of August, and Yahoo news reports that it has ranked 7th in the box office. During the premiere of Sky Crawlers, Oshii said that he’ll quit directing if it isn’t a hit, and that fans should support the movie if they don’t want that to happen.

Miyazaki Hayao’s Gake no ue no ponyo has been #1 for 3 weeks in a row and the new Pokemon movie is #2, also for 3 weeks in a row. Ranked #3 is the new Naruto movie which opened on the same day as Sky Crawlers, and Kung Fu Panda is in #4.

So I guess we might not see Oshii around for a while or something.

Note to Oshii: don’t release films in the summer?

    and what about GitS 2.0?

  4. Jumbo Says:

I suppose I’ll be the only guy that won’t really miss him?

7th isn’t considered a hit? I’d say it’s pretty decent considering the number of fans for the top three.

    >Iori
GitS 2.0 was a limited release movie and there were only like 5 cinemas across the whole of Japan that carried that movie so there isn’t much to say about it I think.

    >Eli
There aren’t many cinemas that would even carry 10 different movies at a time, so being 7th on the first week when sales should be the highest is pretty bad, yeah.

    This is great news.

    This is terrible news!

Oh wait, I was thinking of Makoto Shinkai. I like Ghost in the Shell but he hasn’t done a whole lot else lately.

  9. JockeII Says:

Good. I am tired of these overhyped persons anyway. Now we just need Makoto Shinkai and some more to quit so I don’t have to hear more about their overhyped shit.

  10. Trish Says:

Why won’t he die already? And I mean Miyazaki.

And what the hell, Japan must be the worst place on earth to go to a cinema right now with so many fucking kids everywhere.

@JockeII: agreed, though Oshii is at least better than Shinkai, even if he puts me to sleep 90% of the time.
