Otaku market size 2007
ITmedia has featured some market research data on otaku markets for the year of 2007 conducted by Yano Research Institute showing the current estimated market size in related otaku markets and the growth as compared to the previous year.
The market for printed comics has been said to be gradually shrinking but digital comics has seen a huge boost from the previous year as more magazines started venturing into online digital magazines.
Also at the same time, the doujinshi market is still growing as more become aware of doujin events such as comic market, increasing the number of casual fans.
Also, maid cafes and cosplay related services dropped the most in market size among the markets included in the study. I’m sure nobody saw that the bubble was going to burst when you have 50 maid cafes and services within easy walking distance of each other!

I can happily report that i have personally contributed towards the sales of…
- Doujinshi: Bought several at Comiket, some in Akiba and some in Otome Road.
- Figures: Prized down figurines of Mitsue from Kamichu and that .Hack meganekko and some gashapons.
- Maid or cosplay related services: I visited several maid cafes, most with an otaku friend i met at Cafe Strawberry, i accidentally visited Cure Maid first and met some interesting otaku there.
It’s nice to meet friends or relax for kicks, but be careful, some can be expensive for otaku service, while others mostly offer decent food for reasonable prices.
- Not included: Card games, i bought serious amounts of Magic the Gathering and Lycee.
Anyway, i contributed to the otaku sales of 2007.

I think they left those out from the study because statistics for those two markets for 2007 have probably already been done in the past somewhere
