My bet is that Gonzo’s panicking like a chicken with its head cut off.

Nobody payed any attention to what they’ve been saying? First it’s for the “otaku” and “to do something cool.” Then, as crap went bad, they’re going for the “casual fans.” And now this?

And to think: Until Rosario+Vampire and Iron Linebarrels, Gonzo was kicking major rear end in the international (American) market.

Ero anime isn’t hugely profitable, but it has advantages… it can be done with a small staff, and sales are relatively easier to predict because it caters to a hardcore audience, so everything can be budgeted accordingly.

A good analogy would be pre-PS2 era Koei, which didn’t have big hits back then, but were always profitable because they knew almost exactly how many copies of each game they could sell.

To the extent that it can be said I love Strike Witches–that is to say, not at all–I love it for its relatively consistent drawings of cute girls.

I’d say this is just Gonzo playing to its strengths, but it’s less that and more of an idiot-savant thing. (Light on the savant and heavy on the idiot, mind.)
