I love me some CCS but does the series really need blue ray? How much good can hi-def do to hand drawn cels?

  2. Nosgoroth Says:

Depends on the resolution of the original cels?

By the way, that’s 900$ and 540$ respectively. OUCH.

  3. Anonymous Says:

that’s nothing compared to what the urusei yatsura dvdbox OR ldbox still go for.

but hey, japanese people are stupid enough to pay those prices.

  4. cube Says:

Did they re-shoot all of the original cells though? That’d be ridiculous.

  5. wildarmsheero Says:

It’s a little known fact, but they actually went back and digitally painted Sakura’s clothes out of every shot with her in it.

CCS is non-digital, so any time digital media improves, CCS will look better (or just crispier?), if they remaster the original material.

I have the DVD version that comes in the 3 square boxes (the second collection version) spanning 15 (?) discs which is about 10_5000 yen total.

It doesn’t include the movies, so tack on 1_5000 yen. Though, these BD sets don’t seem to have the movies either. Given the different media prices, I expect the movie set in BD to be sold at an extra 1_8000 yen.

That forest+ page doesn’t say anything about a remaster, but another e-retailer (neowing) breathlessly proclaims it (今回のブルーレイ化にあたって、35mmフィルムをハイビジョンネガテレシネした上に、更に細かくフィルム修正を加えたニューマスター!). Hmph. I’m not a hi-def person yet, but another special figure and Animate tokuten might sway me. If I buy it, I’ll probably keep the DVD version as well.

I think this announcement (oh wait no official announcement yet) is timely because this is the season of the bonus (extra salary from work). A fool and his extra money are soon parted.

@wah: If they did that, they would be held responsible for your death.

    Death by fapping, of course.

When can I get anime in 70mm film format. I have a iMax theather and I want full experience :P

  9. Espr Says:

    @#%!#$% that ain’t cheap!

  10. Sqrfrk Says:

Since the original series was on hand-drawn cels, they can rescan and capture at whatever resolution technology allows (which is pretty damn extensive). Only problem is aspect ratio - they’re either going to keep 4:3 with black on the left and right (since Blu-Ray players are invariably tied to HD sets) or pull a Funimation and do a cut job to convert to a different aspect ratio.

I can understand Blu-Ray price gouging…but damn. With pressed discs coming at a couple bucks per disc, the markup is outrageous.

  11. bluemist Says:

Best news I have ever heard! But the price… aaaaargh.

This is just awesome. If I don’t eat much for the next 3 months I may well afford one. The true otaku in me shall awaken!
