Negima author Akamatsu has reported in his diary that in the fan art corner for vol 26 of Negima, over 60% of the submissions have surprisingly been by females, and many of them are from a younger age group than what they usually receive.
In comparison, over 90% of the fan letters that they got were from males in the past during Love Hina’s run. Though it should also be taken into consideration that males tend to not like drawing fan art or bother writing fan letters.
Akamatsu says this is a small glimpse of the changing times, as over half of the readership in anime magazines are apparently females too, while anime like Gundam and Geass have been the way they were, and a lot of live action shows feature lots of good looking men too.
He figures that half of the reason why Magazine can’t beat Jump is because of this. And another reason being the target age group.
