Rape games will be banned in Japan
TBS news reports that all rape games will be banned from sale or production in Japan. It has been decided. It is estimated that this particular genre takes up about 10% to 20% of the entire industry but the PC software independent review committee has made the decision to ban all these games.
The PC games review committee had originally not seen it as a problem, but now it has come to the point where the entire game software industry has to comply to the new restrictions.
The news article reports that the reason for doing so started with the campaigning efforts of the International woman’s rights organization Equality Now which had started due to the problems found with the sale of Rapelay in other countries.

Edit: I accidently left this out, but they will change their judging criteria starting from the 2nd of June, and the approximately 200 member companies will be restricted from the production and sale of rape games.
I wonder what the brands focused entirely on rape games will do now, and all the other games currently in production. Or maybe they’ll just call it forced transfer of magic powers or something. I sure hope they end this here because eroge is dead if they go through every genre! And then they’ll move on to other media like film and books.

This is a self-regulation from the commercial Eroge publishers , not a really a new law. Given the enforcement of other rules( they really barely enforce they anti-loli rule beyond not mentioning ages), this probably won;t mean much.
Also, it might be lifted after the media attention moves off them. They used to ban incest in games, now they allow it..

From what I gather, Rape focused (Insult) games. games with rape scenes will be fine if they don’t focus on rape entirely.
This is more a result of media attention than Feminazis.
Please note that this is NOT a government intervention, but a self-regulation by Eroge producers, so Doujin games will be unaffected, so will AV.
This ban will likely lifted when the focus is redirected somewhere else. There used to be a ban on incest when a certain game featuring such material was released, however, that ban has since been lifted as eromanga has been doing for a while…

I have been a law-abiding citizen for many years. Back then, laws were meant to protect the people. But during the last decade, more and more laws have been passed which large parts of the first world population plainly refused to abide because they were just protecting companies instead of people. Now there are still laws being passed, this time in the name of ‘minority interests’. I foresee that there again will be lots of people from the mahority having problems to motivate themselves to uphold them because the majority doesn’t benefit at all from them. That way, people get more and more used to committing ‘crimes’. In a not-so-distant future, it could become hard to tell again which laws are useful for the majority and which not. Especially people who are still young today easily grow up breaking the law on a daily basis. I think this is a dangerous trend.

The EOCS is not the only eroge-reviewing organizations.
Back when EOCS still banned incest games, a number of eroge makers simply submit their game to be reviewed by another organization to get around it.
This current “ban” is just to satisfy public attention without having any significant impact on the industry. There are loopholes within EOCS regulations, and you can publish without EOCS’s approval sticker.

I did say “by and large,” and expressed some amount of regret that I couldn’t feel bad about this. Look, these might be perfectly normal people, but they certainly haven’t been portraying themselves that way in the stuff I’ve read from them.

Personally, I don’t understand many people still don’t tell imaginary rape from actual one, especially people living in countries of very high sexual-crime rate. Look at Munhunt 1 and 2. Postal 1 and 2. Chiller. Carmageddon. True Crime: New York City. Hitman: Blood Money.
You get EXTRA POINTS by torturing to death innocent people, women and children included. Beating the crap out of innocent bystanders is not only allowed, but is encouraged.
And if you’re creative and pour gasoline on a woman and light her up, like in Postal 2, you get even higher score.
Or like in Hitman, and The Punisher, where the game encourages players to be as brutal with their victims as possible. And one can say the latter’s plot encourages people to take the law in their hands and go kill those who have wrong them.

I just had a conversation with a family member about the letter writing campaign and so I went online to learn more about the issue. I recognize that freedom of speech, no matter how reprehensible that speech may appear, must be protected in order that I may enjoy the same privilege myself if/when I ever find an issue that inspires me to become an activist.
It pains me to read thoroughly myopic comments on the act of rape itself. There are two rape victims my the family; based upon what I have observed I recognize that rape victims do not ‘get on with their lives’. They may overcome the damage with effort, eventually.
The statistics on rape by nation is severely flawed as the crime often is unreported particularly in countries where the laws are particularly vague and prosecution of perpetrators is consistently weak. Citing Japan as a country that has a “low rate of rapes” reported is intellectually lazy: there is insufficient data to support any valid assessment. Likewise, data on whether the simulation of violent crime inspires people to commit such crime more frequently is also sorely lacking. Generalizations are dangerous for either side of the discussion. It is the broad generalization that the game would inevitably be sold/advertised in the U.S. that got this controversy started.
I was surprised that I had to explain the root cause of this controversy to my family member given that they know we have loved ones suffering from the trauma: many (not just women) believe that violent porn feeds into the fantasy of raping/murdering actual women. Some believe that
simulating sexual violence is a form of practice (think aviation simulators for pilot training) and that therefore the simulation is no different from the act itself in that the gamer is expressing violence. What we seek in entertainment speaks volumes about us individually as well as a collective society.
I am worried about actual women being victimized, as much as I am worried about an actual young man who could simply be accused of rape having this material in his possession: any prosecuting attorney will pursue discovery of the video material of an alleged perpetrator. This material would be rather damaging circumstantial evidence.
I am saddened that the term rape seems to be exclusively applied to women as victims which, though reported much more frequently, perpetuates an assumption that this does not happen to males. One of the victims in my family is a male.
I agree that there is insufficient evidence to support the belief that those who play the games will act out the fantasy in life. I agree that freedom of speech is a precious element of my hyper privileged life and that freedom demands protection for all speech. I sense that had the virulent reaction to the mere existence of these games and the publicity spawned by certain groups only served to promote the sale and use of the material that much more. I regret that I also sense the lack of a shared behavioral code will continue to feed struggles like this.
I do not sense, however, that gamers have anything to fear as there is not a government stance on these games: you may play as you see fit. The vendor appears to be appeasing those who have objections to the material but the capitalist principle dictates that vendors will continue to produce material one way or another.

This is frankly, a load.
The organization thats “Banning” the games is a “self-policing” group, designed to “oversee” the gaming industry and do whats right for the comsumer.
It exists as an entity of the game companies themselves, and vanishes as the gaming companies decide.
Put bluntly, this decision holds no water. Lolicon games have been banned by this same group for over 10 years, and we all know how *that* turned out.
