Misc updates about regulating PC games

I thought I could gather reactions on the official staff blogs from eroge but they were told to refrain from commenting and they’re apparently all obeying that request so instead I wrote about other meaningless stuff and why many are looking at the VisualArts chairman as a hero now after the 2nd of June meeting.
According to this blog by somebody in the eroge industry, the fax released on the 5th of June by the EOCS is just a temporary guideline for eroge makers to follow till they discuss and decide on the actual regulations, however comments are that the fax is really vague and hard to follow. But it appears most games are safe for now as long as they can submit their game within an unspecified time frame.
For now it’s just a bunch of games that had their names changed.
Digital Doujin Hanbai Renrakukai (DHR) will be having a meeting on the middle of June and word is that they’re leaning towards restricting the sale of rape related doujin work.
The DHR comprises of retailers that deal in the online sale of digital doujin and their member companies include DLsite, Getchu, Digiket, Toranoana, Melonbooks, and DMM.
The company that runs DLsite is one of the board members however, and rape and sexual violation makes up a large chunk of the content they sell so it’s hard to imagine that they’ll let this pass without a fight.
DLsite has also released a message to circles saying that they will not be doing any self-censorship yet and are adapting a “wait and see” stance for the time being.
Though, this blog has directly asked the DHR about the situation and they say that there will be no sudden restrictions and they hope to discuss this carefully and look to the long term instead of being affected by events that may only be short-term.
Also, Vector started a big discount sale (NSFW) on downloadable sales of kichiku games till the 25th of June.
Comic Market usually follows industry standards with their restrictions on what can be sold at the event, but they have not yet announced their stance on the situation.
Toriyama Jin, who is a game director, scenario writer, and also an AV director, has written on his blog that the entire thing started from retail shops not wanting to carry rape games, so switching from the EOCS to the CSA will not change anything.
The CSA has already advised live action porn makers to hold back on rape and fake-loli live action AV material since summer 2008, in that sense we can say that the self regulation on 2D works have come pretty late in comparison.
Baba looks really weird written in English so I’ll just refer to him as Vava from now on! The handle name he uses for ai sp@ce and the VA bbs is Chairman vava.
The below is a personal report from somebody else who was present at the meeting. (carries some personal opinions of the person who reported this)
The questions asked by the representatives for the most part of the meeting were mostly people describing their own game and asking if it’ll be affected by the new regulations. Chairman vava was the only guy who really understood what they should be talking about.
Representatives from other eroge brands: Will this game that we’re making be affected by the new regulations? (already assuming that new regulations will be implemented)
Chairman vava: Will we even have new regulations in the first place? If we do what kind of procedure and schedule will used to implement this? Will any of our opinions be reflected?
EOCS director’s reply “shut up and wait for our official notification” (this is not an exact quote and more of what the guy felt the director basically meant)
The big guys that deal in pure love genres basically just sat in the back and just watching to see how it goes. Most of the questions were by the representatives from small eroge brands with stuff that didn’t matter at all, nobody wants to hear a tiny eroge brand describe the sexual preferences of their writer.
Their questions took too much time that by the time vava managed to get his turn to ask the important questions and turned the session in the right direction, the session had already ended almost immediately.
Most of the big guys in the industry deal in pure love genres, and basically only big name brands that deal in rape games are already EOCS directors. (including illusion)
