Mizuki Nana gets first in Oricon Weekly

first to firstMainichi news reports that Mizuki Nana (29) is now the first seiyuu to ever get to #1 on the oricon weekly charts with her 7th album ULTIMATE DIAMOND which sold 74,000 copies in a week. No seiyuu has ever gotten the #1 spot on the weekly rankings since the rankings started in 1968.

Overall sales in the music industry seems to still be going down while sales for anime and seiyuu songs are still climbing. It might not be too long before the next seiyuu gets #1.

Not likely if you look at how well the other seiyuu stuff actually sell. Nana is beating her next closest rivals by a factor of about 3 in sells now (74k vs 22k for people like Yukarin, Minorin, Hocchan, Aya), so Nana is the exception to the rule right now - like how Hayashibara Megumi and Shiina Hekiru sold boat loads more than the others 13 years ago.

Sakamoto stands a good chance I think, unless her albums are not considered seiyuu albums. I’m not very familiar with these seiyuu-or-not classifications. The most I can do is tell the difference between chara song and seiyuu.

But we’re in the age where 30k for an album is enough to be 1st on a bad week, so it’s probably possible for hirano or someone else to get 1st if they get lucky.

Her sales has been holding still if not dipping since the late 90s, not raising, so I don’t think she will get there. Maaya is way past her prime to get more new fans, especially she’s not doing idol-related work which is a big factor in attracting new young blood. Triangular was an exception driven by a one-two punch combo of 1) the premise of the reunion of Sakamoto-Kanno golden pair and 2) Macross Frontier. The same is to be said of her album Kazeyomi because it includes Triangular.

40k is more the right number. The other seiyuu still need to roughly double their current sales to have a chance, and that’s not an easy task because that actually means reaching out beyond the hardcore otaku group which by some magical co-incidence seems to usually top out at around the 25k mark if you look at CDs and DVD sales of anime goods. Again it’s usually one or two works/person that seems to stick out like a sore thumb by selling unusually high numbers, the rest doesn’t quite get over that wall.

The other seiyuu need to defeat Sheng-Long to stand a chance.

30k was 1st just a few weeks ago, and I think the lowest I’ve seen on weekly album 1st was in the vicinity of 28k, and the lowest for weekly single top was… 25k which happened sometime last year I think.
