From the interview:

  • Square Enix asked them if they would like to do a new Estpolis game
  • The second game’s system was a lot more refined, the scenario and music were well liked, and it took place before the first game too, so we decided to use the second game as the motif (Kojima Hajime)
  • We didn’t want to do a straight port (Ukeda Naoyuki)
  • Square Enix told us that we’re free to do whatever we ant (Ukeda)
  • So that’s what we’ll do! (Ukeda)
  • Turn based command battle systems aren’t new anymore, so we’re making it an action rpg now (Kojima)
  • It’s not just a remake, we’re rebuilding the story, the characters, and the world settings (Miyata Masahide)
  • The hadou weapons will be a key component of the story, the world is different from the SFC version (Miyata)
  • The bottom screen will only be used to switch characters (Kojima)
  • The game will revolve around the D-pad more than the touch pen (Kojima)
  • Boss battles will use two screens, it has its own special code for that part (Ukeda)
  • Boss battles will be hard if you don’t know what to do against each one of them (Miyata)
  • “It will satisfy action game players, but players that are bad with action games will be okay too” by Kojima
  • Scenario is based on the second game, there are parts where we are deliberately letting them say the exact same words as in the original game (Miyata)
  • But basically, everything is rewritten (Miyata)
  • The number of towns that are appearing in the game is different from the original two games (Miyata)
  • There will be parts in the game which will make fans of the series smile (Miyata)
  • Miyata has surprisingly not changed at all. He’s just embarrassed reading his scenario from 15 years ago (Ukeda)
  • The music is being brought over from the original two games (Ukeda)
  • We changed the sound quality without messing with the melody line (Ukeda)
  • The main staff from the SFC versions are making this game. It’s rare to have something like that 15 years after the last game (Ukeda)
  • Stuff such as “Mahou no XXXX Magical XXXXXX” from the original are still in the game (Kojima)
  • We changed a lot in the game, but we constantly kept in our minds that “we should keep the parts that made the series what it is” (Kojima)

I completely thought they’re finally going to release part 3 and end the trilogy finally, but it’s actually a remake of 2!

Lets go Mahou no Hitozuma Magical Selena

A last, someone remembers this game, I’m so fucking happy right now.

    2. Jumbo -mobile- Says:

Here’s hoping this means a virtual console release of the first.

    3. n Says:

      Thanks for this.

Oh my God this is incredible. I can’t tell whether to be overjoyed or terrified, the original game was too fantastic.

    4. Anonymous Says:

Slightly hoped for a new game, but a re-imagining of II will do just fine.

    5. Anonymous Says:

Not what I was expecting, but Lufia 2 is still one of my favorite RPGs from the SNES era (although they were quite a few) and so looking forward to this remake and hope it lives up to the source. Thankfully, it sounds like they understand the magic of Lufia, so I wish them the best :)

    6. Niles Says:

Holy, look at the cast list. So they’re keeping the music too? Can’t wait for a port.

    7. Anonymous Says:

Oh, and Zepy, didn’t they technically already release the 3rd part of the trilogy on the GBC? I mean, while it wasn’t as good as the first two games, it did retain common themes. The GBA version was the side story, but GBC seemed like it was trying to be the 3rd part of the main story.

    8. Zepy Says:

Estpolis 3 Ruin Chasers was in development for the PS but was never released because Nihon-Flex bankrupted and died. The GBC version that was released via Taito later was a different game that had nothing to do with Ruin Chasers.

    9. Sushi D Says:

While yes, a new lufia game would be nice, I feel that this is gonna suck hardcore.

    10. Anonymous Says:

I agree Sushi. I’m not saying it will be a bad game, but I’m rather disappointed that they’re changing it to an action RPG instead.

    11. Ultima Says:

+1 I agree Sushi too, but may be…

    12. Booger Says:

DS? Do they know the amount of effort just to reduce the pixelcount to fit into that machine could be better spent just making a dual Xbox 360 / PS3 release. Just a straight port of all assets that come from the PC (which despite being an abandoned platform for published games, is still the primary development platform for every console game) with no optimization at all.

I just don’t get all these DS games with extremely high production values (i.e. Level 5 recruiting Studio Ghibli, etc.) if they won’t let us play these on a big screen hooked up to a decent audio system to fully appreciate the quality. I’m not even talking about HD.

    13. Mattias Says:

Feh, the new art design sucks
