Kyoto, haru. doujinshi distribution info
Doujin circle RubiconHearts has announced that outside of Comic Market, they currently do not have any plans to sell the “Kyoto, haru.” doujinshi on consignment through the existing doujinshi shops. But instead, they will be running a small shop to sell the doujinshi. The shop will be somewhere in Tokyo and will open about 2 to 3 times per month on the weekends.
The reason for this method of distribution that is different from the norm is that they feel that the distribution of doujinshi should also be independent, unlike normal book publications.
They wish to hand the book over to the readers directly by themselves instead of letting other people do it, as one of the fun parts of doujinshi events is that they can get to meet the readers directly. When selling through doujin shops on consignment, this fun is completely gone and the relationship with the readers is usually dull and lifeless.
Also the image above is where they’re doing the color proof for the book. Great backgrounds.

I’m all down for wanting to get back to “the heart” of doujinshi dealing and what have you but lets be honest, there is something to be said for allowing fans of your work that don’t live in the near vicinity of these events to partake in the passionate works they plan on producing.
Not that this will keep shops from lining up and buying multiple copies and yahoo auctioning them or marking them up 500% or more anyways but still…
I guess I’m just glad that the creators that I follow are willing to shed this bit of logic and allow a broader audience the opportunity to partake in their work without having to pay some ridiculous price in an online auction to obtain a copy.

Let’s just hope they don’t have to rent the space.

Wow, the line for this at CM will be insane, if they really don’t plan on allowing commercial vendors a stake at it. And of course, they won’t supply enough for the demand at CM….
If I didn’t know better, I’d say they’re just trying to make these as expensive as possible for those that aren’t lucky enough to pick them up the first time ’round.
Hope they sell them for NatsuComi though… theys purdy.

Blame the middlemen, not the doujinshi artists. The ironic thing about this industry is that it’s supposed to cut out the middlemen, but the limited print runs actually put the profit in their favor, since as mentioned middlemen can jack up to insane prices at auctions (when the original creators only meant to price the works to cover printing costs, not to make a profit).
But I don’t really see a solution to the limited print runs. Ask any publishing house or CD replication facility and the only options they give you are 500, 1000, 5000, or 10,000 runs. If you’re small-time you can only go in the sub-1000 to 5000 range, but your cost difference for 100 prints versus 5000 prints are insane, even when you factor in economies of scale.
Another example, I was able to snap up a nice house at an awesome price, and moving from living in an apartment most of my life, I couldn’t believe I would spend 1,000 dollars just on lightbulbs for the place.
