Shounen Sunday artist has no money

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

binbousekai.jpgWakaki Tamiki, author of Sekesshou Albatross which ran on Shounen Sunday for a year and also has an upcoming new serialization to start in the next issue of Shounen Sunday. However, he writes on his blog that he’s extremely low on money now, with less than 10,000 yen (US$100) in his bank account.

He would have no money to pay the utilities bills, but he managed to get an advance from Shounen Sunday for the manga that’s starting serialization in the next issue.

He also mentions that they haven’t increased the amount he gets paid per page despite having been promised that he’ll get more, and that he has never gotten a raise in the amount he gets paid per page after having been around for 9 years.

He says that when he compares the amount that he gets per page as compared to his other friends that also draw manga in other magazines, they get several thousand more yen per page as compared to him.

Though, it should be noted that mangaka are seldomly able to live off the amount that they get from the magazine and they only really get a substantial amount from tankoubon sales. I always thought the guys that have had a reasonably long serialization in the top selling magazines don’t run into financial problems like this, I thought wrong.

New Negima OVA to come with the comics

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

kakutoumanga.jpgNegima author Ken Akamatsu has announced on his blog that they’ll be releasing a Negima OVA with the limited edition versions of vol. 23 to 25 of the tankoubon. The anime will be by Shaft again and it’ll be based on the manga version of Negima this time.

Akamatsu has been dropping hints on his blog about this for like… six months now. They’re apparently leaving it to him to pick the portions of the story to animate and he has picked chapters 176 to 183 for the 3 episodes.

I was hoping they’d do the final parts of the mahora festival instead…

Anime stuff

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

toranoko.jpgAn anime version of the slice of life manga Hyakko was announced at the Tokyo International Anime Fair held today. Hyakko currently runs on the web magazine FlexComix Blood and is available for free reading on their site.

I liked the manga but I never expected Hyakko to get animated since it was such a… minor manga.

On the other hand the Yozakura Quartet anime was announced some days ago too but that wasn’t much of a surprise.

Rozen Maiden surprise appearance in Young Jump

Monday, March 17th, 2008

shinkuuuu.jpgPeach-Pit has made a surprise appearance in Young Jump in this week’s issue with a one-shot comic called Shoujo no tsukurikata (How to make a girl) about how Shinku was made. The original Rozen Maiden manga ended its run in Comic Birz abruptly last year amid problems.

It isn’t officially serialized in the magazine yet, but there is a note at the end of the comic that says that they will be having a big announcement in next week’s issue.

398 copies of Shounen Sunday for Sakuya

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

398.jpgThis week’s Shounen Sunday comes with a free card of Sakuya from Hayate no gotoku which can be used in the Hayate no gotoku TCG. In commemoration of the Sakuya card, a certain Sakuya fan has brought upon himself to buy 398 copies of the magazine.

He had to travel to 82 different branches of 7-Eleven buying several copies of Shounen Sunday from each branch to complete the task (leaving a few copies so others can get their own copy)

398 is a wordplay on the name “Sakuya”, which is why he bought 398 copies. And each copy of Shounen Sunday costs 250 yen (2.50 USD), so 398 copies comes up to 99,500 yen (995 USD).

…I wonder how he’s going to get rid of 398 copies of Sunday.

Azuma Takeshi debuts in Shounen Sunday

Friday, March 14th, 2008

kimigabuchi.jpgI missed this somewhat, but Azuma Takeshi AKA Entokkun AKA Kimimaru AKA Studio Kimigabuchi had finally made his debut in Shounen Sunday, 7 years after he was originally introduced to the Shounen Sunday editorial staff when he tried to become a shoujo manga artist at a different magazine.

It’s a love comedy one-shot comic called “Change boy” in this week’s issue of Shounen Sunday (issue 15), and if the reception is good he might finally get his first serialization.

Though he probably won’t get serialized till at least 2009 even if the reception is good considering how there will be 4 new serializations in the magazine over the next 6 issues.

Azuma Takeshi has actually been doing one-shot comics irregularly in their supplementary magazine Shounen Sunday Chou, but this is the first time he has managed to get onto the main magazine itself.

I haven’t been reading much of his doujin stuff ever since he changed his pen name to Kimimaru, but RETAKE wasn’t too bad. Though I’m not sure if he’s suitable for Shounen Sunday.
